\nI wasn't sure where you wanted me to post the sample paper I wrote for your Main Idea topic. So I did add it to your wikipage, and and am assuming we can post our comments from each others papers here? Post your notes so we can all see what you found to be important!","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"45714506","body":"Here are my notes from the video:
\n
\nMain idea - main point of what is being stated in an article, paragraph or other passage. It is what is specifically said about a topic.
\n
\nThe topic is the general subject.
\n
\nDetails support what the author is trying to say. Details can be examples.
\n
\nThe main idea can be found by asking the following questions: What point is the writer trying to make? What words are repeated, or what is the writer trying to get across?
\n
\nSometimes the main idea may be found in the very first sentence. But it can be almost anywhere. You'll probably need to go back and re-read until you find it.
\n
\nYou can ask yourself:
\n
\nIs it about a person, an idea, a theory, or an event? Pretend that someone has asked you what something is about - if you can sum it up in one sentence, you've probably got the main idea.
\n
\nThis video reminded me of the fact that finding a main idea is not always easy. Students need to first understand what it a "main idea" is, and they need to be able to comprehend what they are reading. I'd forgotten that this can be difficult for students to do (though I recognize it in some of the articles I've had to read lately!)
\n
\nThe video made some good suggestions!
